Extremadura (2)

Las Hurdes, in the North bordering with the province of Salamanca, is another natural paradise to visit. The Junipers, rockroses and yew trees of the zone embellish wild valleys full of small streams. The humid and smooth climate favours the growth of fruit trees. Another frontier region with an impressive orography is the Jerte valley, characterized by two mountainous alignments that border it: the Gredos and Traslasierra mountains, and where the blossom of cherry trees is a marked sign of identity. Jerte is the departure point of a route towards places of exceptional beauty, like Barranca o Los Pilones. In the south, beautiful places like the Natural Park of Cornalvo near Merida stand out.

The historical patrimony of the region is another attraction for visitors. Some towns in Extremadura have been distinguished by UNESCO as World Heritage Cities because of their artistic and architectonic richness.

Caceres, capital of the province of the same name and declared World Heritage city in 1986, conserves one of the best historical quarters in Spain, and its civil architecture of the XVIth century shines in palaces and noble houses like the House of Golfines. On the other hand, religious architecture like the Parish church of Santiago is another example of its richness.

The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe is situated in the heart of Extremadura, between Villuercas and Altamiras, and keeps a museum with embroiderings, old paintings and sculptures, and is a magnificent example of gothic and mudejar religious art. The monastery, a former center of religion and culture, is built with a gothic temple and two mudejar cloisters, several chapels, the pavilion of the old bookstore, squares with fountains, an auditorium and a famous vestry.
