Castile and Leon has some historical artistic monuments of great importance, from which a great part of the history of Spain comes to live. To admire its convents, monasteries, castles and walled cities is a pleasure. The region also is the land of the cathedrals, and eleven of these cathedral buildings are spread throughout the region, the ones from Leon and Burgos being samples of the excellence of fine architecture.
The castles are the most glorious remains of the historical past of this autonomy, giving name to a part of it. Their locations are always spectacular. Watching the landscape from above, a rosary of castles seeds the entire region. At the moment there are almost 300 castles spread all over Castile and Leon.
History is present and very alive all over this immense territory. The Northern zone of Palencia, for example, hoards one of the greatest concentrations of Romanesque buildings in all Europe. One of its jewels is San Martin de Fromista. The Basilica of San Isidoro, with important frescos in its crypt, is also Romanesque, just as the monastery of San Marcos in the city of Leon.
The province of Valladolid also has a good number of castles like those of Fuensaldaña, La Mota, Peñafiel, Íscar or Simancas. In its capital, the important International Film Festival is celebrated annually.
The Easter of Zamora, declared International Tourist Interest, is characterized by its austerity and silence, being a must-see for all those who want to have a sense of the religion and its processions. In this city the Romanesque cathedral stands out.
