Castilla La Mancha (3)

Artistically, the Gothic style has let itself been felt in these lands and some examples of this are the cathedrals that are conserved in Cuenca, Sigüenza and, mainly, the one in Toledo, which is considered by many people to be the best Spanish gothic cathedral. Renaissance also left its footprints, mainly in Toledo: San Juan de los Reyes and the Santa Cruz Hospital, but also the Palace of Infantado in Guadalajara. The Manierist painting style has its best representative in El Greco, and a great part of his pictorial work can be admired in Toledo.

An important cultural event of Castile La Mancha is the Festival of Almagro, an event to promote Spanish, and foreign, classical theatre authors. During July, Almagro converts itself in an meeting forum that enriches the history of Theatre. The Corral of Comedies (an open-air auditorium) is the centre of this experience. This place is the only corral of comedies from the XVIIth century still conserved in Europe, and was an old inn yard that began to be used like a theatre in the XVIth century. In 1954 it was rehabilitated and it is an essential place for understanding the Golden Century Theatre in Spain. The theatre architecture is unique in the world and it influenced the later development of Spanish theatres. In addition to the Corral, the festival is celebrated at four other locations in town.

Traditional popular art contributes rich crafts of great reputation, prodigal in ceramics. Embroidering, swords from Toledo and knives from Albacete are other products whose fame has transcended the borders of the region, and are known all over Spain now.

Traditional gastronomy is based on stews, hunting meats, cheeses, sausages and wines like those from Valdepeñas. The region has two great gastronomical zones: La Mancha and the Mountain range, with some differences between them, caused mainly by the raw materials. In La Mancha products from irrigated zones (tomatoes, peppers, onions and eggplants) accompany diverse meat dishes. In mountainous zones the characteristic dish is made up of hunting meat: partridge, hare or rabbit are very characteristic of this area. Three typical dishes in La Mancha are: shepherd crumbs, mojete and ratatouille.
