CádiceInformazioni Generali Cádice is the capital of the province of cadiz and is located in the South of Spain. The city has a peculiar geography, it is located on a small streched peninsula, so it cannot grow very much. The city has over 130,000 inhabitants, but this number has declined in the last couple of years, thanks to the unemployment that affects many young people, who therefore leave the city in search of a job elsewhere. The climate is hot in the summer and soft in the winter, but thanks to the strog wind it actually feels colder than it really is. The name Cádice is derived from Gadir, the old fenician name for the city and means fortress or castle. Some famous people from Cádice are Manuel de Falla and José María Pemán. La Storia The city was founded in 1104 b.C. as affirmed in the writings of Veleyo Patérculo. The Fenicians where the original founders of the city and the called it Gdr. From here the exploited the Atlantic trade routes and exported tin and copper. Until the foundation of Carthage it was the comercial centre and port for the fenicians. It was conquered by the Romans, but its status as a comercial centre was maintained. After the fall of the Roman empire the city was conquered four more times and until the reconquest by king Alfonso X in 1262 the city didn’t have much influence. In the times after the discovery of America the Gulf of Cádice was the scene of different naval battles and various countries and pirates, like Barbarossa and the Duke of Essex, Francis Drake, tried to take over the city. On the 21st of Octobre of 1805 the Spanish/French fleet left the port of Cádice to do battle with the English fleet of Horatio Nelson, and with their defeat the Spanish naval tradition went down with them. During the Napoleonic invasion representatives of all the spanish territories convened in Cádice and signed the first Spanish Constitution in 1812. With the independence of the colonies in 1898 the city lost its importance once again. On the 18th of August of 1947 an arms depot of the navy exploded, ruining great parts of the city, but greatfully the old centre was mostly spared. Nowadays the city suffers from the problems of the fishermen and unemployment, and income from tourism isn’t enough to support the economy of the city.
