Monuments of BilbaoOn the ‘must see’ list, is the Guggenheim museum. This amazing piece of architecture was designed by an American architect named Franck Gehry and visitors flock here just to see the building itself. It is said to be one of the world’s most fascinating constructions. The inspiration came from the anatomy of a fish and the hull of a boat, which are both important parts of the past and present of Bilbao’s history, and is perfectly located by the river. It is made from Titanium, limestone and glass, which are meant to resemble fish scales. The interior is ideal for art exhibitions due to the fantastic use of space and light. There is a permanent collection of works from several well known artists including Picasso, Miró and Klee. On the bottom floor you will find the ‘Fish Gallery’ which is longer than a football pitch. There are free guided tours in English, although you can do a self guided tour if you prefer. To have a glimpse of the Guggenheim from another perspective, take the funicular de Artxanda to the top of the hill, which also offers panoramic views over the city. Bilbao also has a Fine Arts Museum (Plaza del Museo 2) which has a collection ranging from Gothic to 20th art, including many works by typical Spanish artists, El Greco and Goya. Other popular sites in Bilbao can be appreciated while wandering in the old town, such as the Catedral de Santiago, Plaza Nueva and the Teatro Arriaga. Like everywhere in Spain, Bilbao has its annual festivals. The Carnaval in February is celebrated in style but the biggest fiesta is the Aste Nagusia held annually on the first Saturday after the 15th august. What are you looking for in Santader? |
