Caravaca is also a privileged enclave to experience rural tourism. A great number of rural hotels and hostels are spread out around the town and numerous activities of active tourism are offered that allow contact with nature, like trekking or horse riding.
Murcian celebrations and fairs combine religious manifestations with more popular ‘fiestas’. The Mediterranean Folklore Festival, in the first two weeks of September, or the Murcian Easter Parade, are examples of this diversity. In the Murcian capital, the ‘Huerta’ (irrigated land) is a protagonist in ‘El Bando’, one of the main acts of the denominated Spring Celebrations. One day, the ‘Huerta’ and the city are brotherly united with people wearing typical regional dresses.
Another important festival is the ‘Cante de las Minas’(Mines song contest), which is celebrated in La Union during August. It is an extraordinary occasion to admire the art of flamenco dancing and singing.
In Cartagena, the celebration of the Carthaginians versus the Romans has become a social phenomenon that involves the entire city. This is an original commemoration that represents the events that took place in this area during the Second Punic War.
Murcian gastronomy stands out because of its stews, salads and rice. But it is not only ‘La Huerta’ that provides excellent raw materials, the sea is also a precious source for the Murcian gastronomy, with excellent fish (mujol, monkfish, grouper), cooked in an iron saucepan, with pepper and garlic sauce. Concerning wines: besides those of the Cartagena Region, Ricote stands out, as well as other recognized Denominations of Origin, like Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla.
Excellent vegetables from the ‘Huerta’ serve to flavour dishes like rice and kidney beans, the gypsy pot, the Spanish stew with balls, and michirones. The ‘Huerta’ also offers thousands of different salads with local vegetables. As far as candies, visitors should not leave Murcia without trying ‘tocinos de cielo’, marzipanes and Caravaca ‘yemas’.
