Región de Murcia (2)

From ‘Las Aguilas’ fishing town to ‘El Mojon’ beach dunes, in ‘La Manga del Mar Menor’, kilometers of beaches and creeks spread out, awaiting swimmers. The nautical Port of ‘El Mar Menor’ is a good site for nautical sports lovers, and one of the best places in the world to practice sailing, canoeing, swimming, water skiing, nautical motorsports, windsurfing, catamaran sailing and all kinds of other activities in the various ports and sport schools.

Murcia is the capital of the region and is crossed by the Segura River. It has a beautiful baroque cathedral and in her historical quarter, Arab buildings like the Castle of Monteagudo, a XIth century fortress, can be seen. Temples like those of ‘La Merced’, San Miguel, ‘Las Claras’, Santo Domingo or San Juan de Dios unite their rich architecture in an important pictorial and sculptural patrimony, with works like the ones by Francisco Salzillo. In city museums, like the archaeological museum, the ´Bellas Artes’ Museum, or the one dedicated to Salzillo, sculptures created by the Murcian artist for the Holy Friday procession can be admired, as well as its well-known Bethlehem sculpture.

Cartagena is the second city of the region and was founded by the Carthaginians as "Carthage Nova". The rich history of this city can be contemplated in its Archaeological Museum. Lorca, whose urban center was declared historical-artistic site in 1964, is called the baroque city because of its important legacy of this architectonic style in its historical quarter.

Caravaca is a holy city for Catholics, the city of the cross that carries its name. Its sanctuary has an interesting Sacred Art and History Museum. The town is famous because of its religious cult devoted to the ‘Holy Cross’, which is especially visible during Reconquest celebrations from the 1st to the 15th of May. The fortress, with its fourteen towers, was built in the XVth century, and then reconstructed in the XVIIth century on the Arab ruins.
