The “Costa de la Luz” (Coast of the Light) runs from the Atlantic coast in Tarifa to the Portuguese border, and its main characteristics are its beautiful dunes. Algeciras is a good point to begin a travel. From there you can take ferries that go to Africa and the Canary Islands. You can also travel along the coast to Cadiz, one of the most charming cities in Spain, and one of the oldest ones in all of Europe: it was founded by the Phoenicians. The carnivals are an institution in the city, and these, along with those of Tenerife, are the most famous ones in all of Spain because of their joy and good atmosphere. Half an hour from Cadiz is Jerez, famous because of its sherry wine and its motor sports circuit, habitual place where Formula 1 races are held.
The supply of leisure is varied: golden beaches, high mountains with wild fauna, picturesque white towns, rich folklore, and the most modern sport facilities. Skiing in the evening in Sierra Nevada, after a morning bath on the beach is a luxury that few regions have to offer. Surfing in Tarifa, where the most optimal conditions of all Europe can be found, or making horseback trips through places that centuries back were territories dominated by “bandoleros,” are exciting experiences. Practising paragliding or enjoying multiple golf courses are some of the possibilities that this bright Spanish region offers.
Many places on the coast are very popular (Marbella, Nerja, Torremolinos...), but you will also find small beaches where you will practically be alone (Coast of the Light, Tropical Coast). The most dynamic visitors can practise mountaineering in Sierra Nevada, speleology in multiple caves, globe strolls, whales observation, diving and much more. For the lovers of nature, there is nothing like taking a walk in the Park of Doñana, a paradise of nature, or going to the Mountain range of Cazorla. Andalusia is so great and varied that boredom is not a word that can enter the vocabulary of a visitor to this millenarian Spanish region.
